FORT BENNING, Ga. - To the extreme coupon aficionado, the phrase "Army Values" might indicate a sale on uniforms, tank parts and all things green and tan, but for those of us that have raised our right hand and recited the oath of enlistment, along with our families and supporters, the Values represent a way of life.

Memorial Day is traditionally a time to remember the Soldiers that have made the ultimate sacrifice, and the Families they have left behind. I submit that we honor these heroes not only on Memorial Day, but every day by living the Army Values.

The Soldiers that have fought before us showed us how to be Loyal to our country, our unit, and perhaps more importantly, to our fellow soldiers.

It is a sense of Duty that brings every soldier together, bonding generations of fighting men and women together as icons of freedom to people worldwide.

Respect is given to those that have given their last breath in defense of our nation and Respect is earned from our peers when we work as a team.

The men, women and Families we honor every Memorial Day embody the meaning of Selfless Service.

It is our Honor to serve, and it is with Honor that we live our lives with every choice that we make as role models, and it is Honor we show to the soldiers of the past.

Our predecessors did what was right, and it is with that Integrity we carry the legacy of the U.S. Army Soldier.

We have seen the Personal Courage shown by our brethren, and we draw upon our own inner strength to live every day better.

These values will never be for sale, and they cannot be discounted. They are our way of life, and we will rise to our potential through them. Join me, not just on Memorial Day, but every day, in living the Army Values.
