FORT RUCKER, Ala. (May 3, 2012) -- Sometimes it seems the life of a military spouse is all about other people -- a deployed Soldier, a child, or a distant family member. However, May 11-12, will be all about Army spouses at Fort Rucker.
"For Military Spouse Day, we want to make sure the spouses know we recognize the sacrifices they make to support the Soldiers and appreciate all they do," said Rebecca Hewison, The Landing promotions coordinator. "Even though one day will never be enough to let all the spouses know we support them, our hope is to at least let them know all they do is not forgotten and doesn't go unnoticed."
In recognition of Military Spouse Day, The Landing Zone, Mother Rucker's and all three Coffee Zone locations will be offering specials for spouses, Hewison said.
On May 11, Mother Rucker's will serve free cheesecake to military spouses with the purchase of an entrée and spouses can enjoy 50 percent off all beverages at the three Coffee Zone locations. Blue Star Card holders can receive a free beverage by presenting the card at the time of purchase.
On May 12, Soldiers can treat their spouse to a free entrée with the purchase of another entrée at The Landing Zone. Spouses of deployed Soldiers can present their Blue Star Card and receive a free entrée without the purchase of another entrée, she said.
"Our hope is to give them encouragement and show support at home while their Soldier is away," Hewison explained.
Army Community Service is also honoring military spouses by sponsoring an ice cream social at the Bowden, Allen and Munson Heights Neighborhood Centers May 11, from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., said Tom Jenkins, ACS information referral program manager.
All military spouses, those living on-post and off-post, are invited to attend the "casual get-together" for an ice cream sundae and information packet prepared by ACS.
"We're going to the spouses instead of bringing everybody to us," said Jenkins, adding that spouses are welcome to ask questions about the various services available on post while they are there.
Military spouses and other women on post are also invited to a Women's Health Fair and Baby Shower May 15, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Landing, according to Janice Erdlitz, Directorate of Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation marketing director.
The free event features health screenings, demonstrations, activities and educational material, she said. Obstetrics and pediatric representatives will also be available for moms and moms-to-be.
"Personally, as a spouse, I can say I appreciate what MWR and the locations are offering," said Hewison. "It is nice to know people continue to provide support throughout your local community."
