FOREST PARK, Ga. -- (Oct. 12, 2011) Local government and civic leaders along with the military community took part in the Gillem Enclave Ribbon Cutting Ceremony held Oct. 12 at the newly built, main entrance to the Enclave in Forest Park, Ga.
As a result of the Base Realignment and Closure Act of 2005, Fort Gillem was reduced to a military enclave.
"This ribbon cutting culminates over five years of extremely hard work, during which time this installation has been transformed into an enclave and partner with Fort Gordon," said Col. Robert A. Barker, Fort Gordon garrison commander. "By this ceremony, members of Fort Gordon and Fort Gillem officially join hands as coworkers and teammates."
Government and civic leaders from the communities surrounding the Enclave all took part in the actual ribbon cutting to officially open the Gillem Enclave.
"The continued value of the Gillem Enclave clearly shows that the misgivings that came out of BRAC 2005 have been overcome by the determined efforts of the local community, by local leaders and by the remaining members of the talented enclave staff" said Barker.
The Gillem Enclave is under the control of Fort Gordon. U.S. Army Garrison-Fort Gordon provides that necessary base operations support to the Enclave. Although not classified as a full service installation or sub-installation, Fort Gordon supplies organizations and activities on the Enclave with a broad range of installation-type services. The Gillem Enclave Base Operations Coordinator, Howard Butler is the senior on-site representative for Fort Gordon.
"As Fort Gillem was before, the Gillem Enclave will continue to be a partner and friend to the surrounding cities of Forest Park, Lake City and Morrow" said Butler.
