FORT GEORGE G. MEADE, Md. - Country music star Blake Shelton performed a free concert Friday night as part of his Tour for the Troops. Fans began to gather on the parade field more than 12 hours before the start of the show to get a perfect view of the stage.
Fort Meade Garrison Commander Col. Edward Rothstein was one of two thousand country music fans that came out to hear Shelton perform his hit songs. Rothstein appreciated Shelton's commitment to the military and was pleased Fort Meade was included on his tour.
"Having Blake Shelton perform tonight for the military community was just fantastic. His coming here shows his appreciation for what our service members do," said Rothstein. "The concert was great and it was nice to see the community out enjoying the music and having a good time," he continued.
Sgt. 1st Class Brian Lehnhardt, Defense Information School, was one of several people who were willing to wait 12 hours to claim their perfect spot for the concert. Fans were allowed to setup as early as 8 a.m. Friday. Lehnhardt, a country music fan, took advantage of the long holiday weekend to reserve spots for two families. "I had the day off. So, I thought why not," Lehnhardt said.
In addition to his music, Shelton is a celebrity judge on the television program The Voice. He has had eight number one country single hits.
