FORT GEORGE G. MEADE, Md. (June 2, 2011) -- Soaring temperatures marked the weekend opening of five pools on Fort Meade.
Hundreds of patrons cooled down and frolicked in the neighborhood center pools and Rock Avenue Outdoor Pool over the Memorial Day weekend.
"It was busy," said Katie Herringbone, lead instructor at Gaffney Fitness Center Pool and acting aquatics manager.
Picerne Military Housing manages pools in four neighborhood centers. Three pools were close to capacity, while a fourth -- in Heritage Park -- reached capacity over the holiday weekend, said Meagan Murray, communications specialist for Picerne.
"Everyone had a good time," she said.
Rock Avenue pool
The Rock Avenue Outdoor Pool is open to military members, DoD civilians, immediate family members and guests.
The 120-foot rectangle pool, which starts at two feet in the shallow end and goes up to 10 feet in the deep end, features two basketball nets.
Food may be brought to the pool area, but alcohol and glass containers are prohibited. Soda vending machines are available.
The daily fee per person is $3 for military members and immediate family members and $5 for civilian DoD cardholders and their immediate family members. Cost for other guests is $7 per day.
Summer pool passes are available at Gaffney Fitness Center and vary in price, depending on military status. Season membership for service members costs $80 for ranks E1 to E5 and $120 for all others. Season family membership for DoD civilian cardholders costs $180.
The Rock Avenue pool is open weekends from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Starting June 11, the pool also will be open weekdays from 1 to 8 p.m.
