Fort Jackson, S.C. - Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates visited Fort Jackson today to get a first-hand look at how civilians are transformed into Army Soldiers during basic combat training. His visit was part of a multi-base tour that started at Camp Lejune, N.C., this morning, and will include other training installations.

While here, he had a chance to sit down for lunch with 10 drill sergeants for an hour-long open forum about the challenges and opportunities they face, their service in the Army, concerns about the future and overall pride in what they do.

Secretary Gates spent several hours observing Soldiers performing multiple training events, including buddy-team live-fire, operating in an urban environment and conducting battlefield life-saving actions. While visiting the training events, he took time to thank Soldiers for joining the Army and serving their nation.

Fort Jackson commanding general, Maj. Gen. James M. Milano was very upbeat about the visit.

"I am extremely proud to have had Secretary Gates here today and for him to see the outstanding work our noncommissioned officers accomplish on a daily basis."

The secretary will retire next month. Current CIA director Leon E. Panetta has been nominated to replace him.
