Three members of the U.S. Army Contracting Command have been selected to attend the Senior Service College Fellowship Program designed to develop future defense acquisition leaders.
Peggy Maxwell, Debra Abbruzzese and Undra Robinson were selected to attend by a Department of the Army centralized selection board for the Defense Acquisition University program.
Maxwell is the chief of the strategic human capital division for ACC Human Resources (G1) at Redstone Arsenal, Ala.; Abbruzzese is the chief of Division B for ACC-Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md.; and Robinson serves as the associate director for information technology at the ACC-National Capital Region Contracting Center in Alexandria, Va.
The 10-month professional developmental opportunity begins in July and is offered at three locations including Huntsville, Ala., Warren, Mich., and Aberdeen Proving Ground. Maxwell will participate at Huntsville, while Abbruzzese and Robinson will participate at Aberdeen Proving Ground.
Established in 2006, the SSCF provides leadership and acquisition management training for Army Acquisition Corps members at the GS-14 and -15 levels or their equivalents.
The program consists of executive leadership and mentoring, the Program Manager's Course, a national security module, the Senior Leadership Speaker's Program, a senior research project as well as master's degree courses.
The SSCF program is designed to develop civilian acquisition leaders in preparation for roles as product and project managers, program executive officers and other key acquisition positions. Following completion of the program, participants are assigned to positions of greater responsibility.
April Miller, Mission and Installation Contracting Command acting deputy to the commander, arrived at Fort Sam Houston, Texas in July 2010 as part of an executive developmental assignment following her completion of the fellowship program.
"The fellowship program is invaluable and provides an understanding of the complexity of strategic issues you have to deal with in Army leadership - from national security and program management to acquisition across the board," said Miller, adding that it also offers a beneficial networking opportunity. "The relationships built through one-on-one mentorship with senior leaders and with participants from across different functional areas are very helpful in developing a foundation that you can build upon in a senior leader position."
She added that the SSCF program also offers members in the acquisition career field an alternative for senior service college.
"By bringing together essential elements found in other programs such as the Army War College or Industrial College of the Armed Forces, the program helps prepare civilian participants for positions in the senior executive service," Miller said.
The cutoff for application packages to be considered by the next SSCF selection board will be in February 2012. Army Acquisition Corps members with a Level III certification in functional area, secret clearance or ability to obtain one, bachelor's degree, and preferred completion of the Program Management Course PMT 352 are eligible to apply.
