OKLAHOMA CITY -- State Rep. Joe Dorman said Monday he was pleased to host a contingent from Fort Sill to recognize a special day in the post's history.
"I was honored to host a delegation from Fort Sill on Monday to recognize the 100th anniversary of field artillery at the post," Dorman, from Rush Springs, said. "I remember growing up and hearing the sound the cannons made when the Fort Sill artillery was training. At the time, I wondered what they were up to. Later, I had the chance to tour Fort Sill with my Leadership Oklahoma class and see firsthand the things these men and women do in their training. It is truly fitting to honor and recognize all the Soldiers who have trained at Fort Sill over this period of time, extend our thanks for their service and wish the best for those who will in the future continue the proud tradition of this wonderful Army post."
House lawmakers unanimously approved House Concurrent Resolution 1018, by Dorman, which designated May 19 as Field Artillery Day in Oklahoma.
Bill Burgess, civilian aide to U.S. Army for Oklahoma, said he was pleased by the passage of resolution, as the Fort Sill is such an important source of jobs and pride for Lawton and southwest Oklahoma.
Brig. Gen. Thomas Vandal, Field Artillery School commandant, thanked House lawmakers for passing the resolution.
"On behalf of Major General David Halverson, the commanding general of Fort Sill, and all of our Soldiers and family members at Fort Sill, past and present, I'd like to thank the state of Oklahoma for this award, and I would also like to thank you for your continued support for all your Soldiers."
