FORT STEWART, Ga. -- Fort Stewart's children, like children everywhere, love to hear lively music, clap their hands, tap their feet, dance and otherwise stay on the move.
They will have plenty of opportunities during the Child, Youth and School Services' celebration of April as the Month of the Military Child. The celebrations will be held at the Child Development Centers.
Older military children also have been front and center in planning for the celebration. Included on the calendar for them are a Wildlife Jamboree, a Spring Fling Dance and a lock-in.
Leah Cabey, CYSS Facility Director in building 403 on Fort Stewart, is working with CYSS colleagues and staff to coordinate the month-long celebration at the CDCs and elsewhere.
The schedule includes a wide range of activities, from Shawn Brown's Super Fun Show on opening day April 1 to the popular Wheels Day on April 22 and the celebration-closing Carnival on April 29.

Following are some of the highlights of the Stewart celebration. The theme is "The Month of the Military Child - The Strength of Our Future:"
April 1, Opening Day - Shawn Brown, called "early childhood's premier edu-tainer," will bring his Super Fun Show to the Youth Center, building 7338, for two performances. The first show, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., will be for the 3, 4 and 5-year-olds. The second show, from 2 to 3 p.m., will be for the first through fifth-graders, which is open to the community.
April 15 - Magic Marc, a magician, TV personality and author, will perform two shows at the CDC in building 403. The first show will be at 9 a.m. and the second at 3 p.m.
April 22-Wheels Day, an event to which the community is invited, is a popular event that delights the children. They get to safely explore and learn about big trucks, Army equipment like their Moms and Dads use, and fire and police vehicles. Inflatables, face-painting and crafts activities add to the fun.
April 29-A fun-filled carnival will mark the closing of the special, month-long observance at the CDCs. Children from other CDCs will be transported to building 403 for what Cabey described as "a time of jumping up and down, noise, music, inflatables, face-painting, games and prizes." She added that special characters will pay a visit so lots of pictures can be taken.

April 1 - An Outdoor Wildlife Jamboree will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Holbrook Pond Recreation Area for CYSS youth in grades 5-12. Transportation and cookout are provided. For additional details, call the School Liaison Office at 912-767-6533).
April 1 - Spring Fling Dance for sixth- to eighth-graders from 7-10 p.m. at Youth Center, building 7338. The cost is $3 for members and $5 for non-members. For details about the dance and other activities listed below, call 912-767-4491
April 15 - Parent vs. Youth Video Games/Board Game Challenge.
April 16-17 - MST Lock-in.
April 22 - Parents vs. Youth Gym Activities, including volleyball, obstacle course and basketball.

MOMC Hunter Army Airfield Events
Hunter Army Airfield children will - among other things - fly kites, plant a character garden, bounce with glee on inflatables, learn from police and firefighters about staying safe and enjoy a picnic with their parents.
Those events and others are all part of the Child, Youth and School Services' celebration of April as the Month of the Military Child. The celebration will be held at the Child Development Centers in building 8807 on South Perimeter Road and building 1284 on North Middleground Road, and the School Age Services Center, building 8805, to honor military children.
Amarys A. Martinez, director of the CDC centers at Hunter, said a number of activities are planned for the children and their parents. "We invite parents to come to our facilities and sit out with the children and see all the great things they are capable of doing," she said.

Following are some of the highlights of the Hunter CDC celebration. The focal point is observing "Month of the Military Child," for the sacrifices and contributions the military's children put forth today.:
April 1, Opening Day -At building 1284, the children will parade around the block, then take part in a ceremony to mark the start of Month of the Military Child. Refreshments will be served following the ceremony.
April 5, 6 - On April 5, the Fire Department will bring the Fire Safety House to building 1284 so the children can learn how to stay safe and what to do if they see a fire. The firefighters and the Fire Safety House will be at building 8807 the next day.
April 7, 8 - Children in vehicles will be the focus during the Child Occupancy Car Safety day April 7 at building 8807 and April 8 at building 1284. Parents will be able to learn all about the safety aspects of car seats
April 11-15, April 18-22 - Throughout Scholastic Book Fair Week, April 11-15 at building 8807 and April 18-22 at building 1284, the children will be encouraged to read and to develop a love for reading. A collection of books will be available to them.
April 14 - Children at the CDC centers are taught the importance of character traits such as trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness and caring. On April 14 at both centers, the children will plant a "Character Garden" composed of various types of flowers. The children will be encouraged to "grow" their character as they watch the flowers in the "Character Garden" grow. They will be taught that, "What you sow is what you grow."
April 22 - "Field Day'' will begin at 3:30 p.m. at each center. The children will enjoy fun and games on the centers' playgrounds with their siblings and their parents.
April 28 - Kite Day will give the children a chance to fly kites they made the week before this event. This event will be held at the playgrounds of both centers.
April 29 - A Family Picnic, with food, fun, train rides and games, will bring the month's celebration to a close. The picnic will be held at building 1284 only. The CDC cannot provide transportation from building 8807 to the picnic, "but we want to encourage all of the parents of children at building 8807 to pick up their children and join us for the picnic at building 1284," Martinez said.
