Military Legislative Assistants from Senators Tom Coburn, Okla., and Claire McCaskill, Mo., offices recently visited the Software Engineering Center's Tactical Logistics Directorate at Fort Lee, Va., to learn more about the capabilities of the Global Combat Support System-Army .

The GCSS-Army is an enterprise resource planning solution that uses commercial off-the-shelf applications along with Web-based technology to streamline all the logistical processes required to maintain equipment and vehicles. The system simplifies the logistics process by incorporating maintenance reporting, supply logistics, property book and finance applications. A key element of GCSS-A is the ability to conduct tactical financial transactions, an element not found in the current system.

Once fully implemented, the GCSS-Army will replace several logistics information technology systems which are currently the foundation for the Standard Army Management Information Systems and will allow organizations to have a better view of the true cost of maintenance over the lifetime of the equipment.
