On November 11 we celebrated and honored our veterans, past and present.
It was a time to reflect on our fallen comrades and the sacrifices they and their loved ones have made in defending the freedoms we enjoy as citizens of this great nation.
Veterans Day is traditionally a time of parades, ceremonies, and activities shared with others. Participation in many of these activities may involve travel. The observance also helps signal the beginning of the long holiday season, which also involves massive travel. With this travel comes inherent risk. With proper planning and the following of basic safe driving practices, we can greatly reduce the potential for accidents.
Limit distractions in vehicles while traveling. Avoid electronic devices, including cell phones, video games and global positioning systems.
Make sure all passengers are buckled up and children are securely fastened in age-appropriate safety seats.
Allow plenty of travel time with scheduled breaks to avoid frustration and reduce the temptation to speed.
Drive defensively and exercise caution, especially during inclement weather.
Don't Drink and drive! Even consumption of wine and beer in moderation significantly impairs reaction time and judgment.
As always, engaged Leadership is paramount to a safe and successful holiday weekend. We must be aware of each and every Soldier's planned activities, and take steps to ensure that risk reduction steps are in place.
Leaders must identify high risk Soldiers, and take actions to guarantee that these individual's have a safe and happy holiday weekend.
I personally challenge each and every one of you to put safety first throughout the season and ask that you remember those that cannot be with us as they serve this great Nation around the world. Finally, I wish you, your Families, and friends a safe and happy holiday. Air Assault!
