PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. - Presidio of Monterey community members welcomed the new 229th Military Intelligence Battalion commander during a change of command ceremony on Soldier Field here recently.
After handing over the batallion to Lt. Col. Kent Webber Aug. 25, Lt. Col. David P. Jewell said during his farewell speech that the batallion gave him "the best two years of his career."
Jewell also gave Webber some parting words of advice regarding the care of the Soldiers he called "the best and most precious treasures the United States produces."
"I'm confident the Army's chosen the right leader in you, with the right experiences, to lead this battalion to the next level of excellence," Jewell said. "I challenge you to trust your noncommissioned officers and demand the best from the battalion's cadre and students. I ask you to lead them with fairness, generosity, courage and love, which is what I have tried to do."
For Webber, the ceremony was like a homecoming. "This is the third time I've been assigned to the 229th Military Intelligence Battalion and it seems in as fine a shape as I've ever seen it," Webber said.
Webber closed his brief speech with a promise to his new battalion: "I am humbled by this great opportunity to serve and support you. ... I pledge to give you all I've got in the days ahead."
