FORT RUCKER, Ala. -- About 60 children fed their curiosity about "Curious George" at the Fort Rucker Center Library Aug. 10.
Children ages 3 to 11 and their parents participated in arts and crafts, refreshments and viewed the 2006 "Curious George" film, starring Will Ferrell.
Jamie Mize, Center Library director of children's programs, said the event was a great way to teach children about reading and give them an opportunity to make new friends.
"We just want them to have fun," Mize said. "This was a big celebration of the monkey. It's the first time we've done something related to 'Curious George,' but it kind of sells itself. It's neat to see a character that's held up for so many years still resonate with (children)."
Shannon Singell, Center Library technician, said she got almost as much out of the event as the children.
"Monkeys are fun and silly, so it works perfectly for children," she said. "Working with children is awesome."
Jennifer Thorson and her son, Elijah, were excited about attending and both had a great time working with the arts and crafts.
"I think it's an excellent way to get children interested in the library and to get them reading at an early age," Jennifer said. "(Elijah's) been looking forward to this since he first heard about it."
Elijah said his favorite part about the "Curious George" movie was the music and George the monkey.
Mize said she hopes events like this one will continue and help more children become interested in spending time at the library.
"We've got more of these events planned for later in the year," Mize said. "Hopefully we'll be able to take more children next time. This event had a maximum of 60 and we filled that very quickly."
"Curious George" was created by husband and wife team Hans Augusta and Margret Rey. The couple wrote the first seven manuscripts, dubbed the "Original Adventures," from 1941 to 1966.
