FORT SILL, Okla.--Fort Sill's Field Artillery Museum received the 2010 Army Historical Foundation Excellence in Museums Award at a ceremony this week in Arlington, Va.
"This is awesome news and we are so proud of the FA Museum and the whole staff," Fires Center of Excellence and Fort Sill Commanding General Maj. Gen. David Halverson said in a news release. "Personally, I'm not surprised, as we have a great team and they have done so much."
The award is from the Army Historical Foundation, which created the honor in 2000 for Army museums that have done something worthy of emulation by other museums, such as programs and exhibits.
The plaque reads, "For new galleries that provide visitors a dramatic representation of the history of the Field Artillery branch and the development of artillery in the U.S. Army that demonstrate a high degree of imagination, talent, and effort that is worthy of emulation by all Army museums."
The museum also will receive a $1,000 cash prize.
"This is a tremendous accomplishment for (curator) Gordon Blaker and his staff, especially considering they opened their doors a year ago," said Frank Siltman, Fort Sill Museums and Military History director. "This is also recognition of the hard work and planning for the entire museum staff, including the Fort Sill Museum staff, who did the long-term planning and preparation and the supporters and volunteers who helped it become a reality."
