FORT RUCKER, Ala. -- Many activities provide ways for Families to have fun together and celebrate the new season during SpringFest March 19-20 at the festival fields between Crusader, Cowboy and Box Car streets.
Hosted by Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation staff to support Families here through the Army Family Covenant, the free celebration runs March 19 from 4 to 11 p.m. and March 20 from noon to 11 p.m.
Dubbed a "Rucker Rocks" event, the festival and concerts are open to the public. "Rucker Rocks" is a new DFMWR initiative to get Soldiers and Families excited about installation activities, according to Janice Sullivan, DFMWR marketing director.
"We are very excited to bring the incredible 'Rucker Rocks' event to the Soldiers and Families," she said.
Fees for the Kids' Zone are $1 per ticket or $10 for an unlimited-per-day-use armband, and there are minimal food and beverage charges.
The two-day festival offers a Kids' zone with inflatables, a Warrant Officer Career College-sponsored obstacle course for children to test their physical prowess and vendors who sell a variety of food, beverages and wares.
To wrap up both days' fun, free live entertainment features upcoming artist Katie Armiger. Armiger said she is excited about performing here.
"I am so grateful to our troops for all that they do for our country every day so it is really an honor to get the chance to perform at Fort Rucker," she said. "I am excited to be able to thank them in a special way with a performance."
Performances by other artists include The Regulars Band, The Mutt Brothers, 98th Army Band and The Lockdown Blues Band.
A St. Patrick's Day 5K/10K and 1-mile fun run kicks off the March 20 events.
Race registration begins at 8 a.m. and the race at 9 a.m. Winners are recognized at an awards ceremony at 11:45 a.m. that day, according to Lori Ciranni, DFMWR Sports, Fitness and Aquatics manager.
The first open-grass area festival was held last year between Andrews and Fifth avenues to give the Fort Rucker community convenient access and allow adequate space as the event grows.
Once again, the roadways are blocked off for vehicle traffic beginning March 19, according to Tim Carter, DFMWR food and beverage director.
Many upgrades continue to be made to the festival area, he said.
"We have added new lighting and new light poles," Carter said. "This will alleviate the need for generators, allowing for additional space. As we hold each event on these fields, we continue to make it better."
