FORT McPHERSON, Ga. Jan. 28, 2010 -- The official fanfare ensemble for the President of the United States, The U.S. Army Herald Trumpets, will join the Army Ground Forces Band for a free concert at the Ferst Center for the Arts at Georgia Tech, 8 p.m., Saturday, March 6.
Entitled "Sound the Trumpets," the concert will present an evening of stirring music for the entire family, including "Olympic Fanfare and Theme" and "Liberty Fanfare" by John Williams and "Quiet City" by Aaron Copland.
"This concert offers Atlanta a rare treat to hear perhaps the most powerful brass ensemble in the world and a national treasure," said Maj. Domingos Robinson, commander and conductor of the Army Ground Forces Band. Robinson was the director of The Army Herald Trumpets before assuming his current position. "The Heralds were specially created to perform for the President and his diplomatic guests."
A performing element of The U.S. Army Band "Pershing\'s Own" in Washington, D.C., The Army Herald Trumpets has performed for countless events of national and international significance.
Founded in 1959 and patterned after traditional British "fanfare" trumpet ensembles, The Army Herald Trumpets has been featured with orchestras from around the world, including, the National Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, the Istanbul State Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Pops and the Cincinnati Pops. The Herald Trumpets has also performed with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and the Orchestra at Temple Square in Salt Lake City.
In addition, the ensemble has performed at nationally and internationally televised events such as Super Bowl XXXIX, The Kennedy Center Honors, the relighting of the Statue of Liberty and the annual holiday celebrations "A Capitol Fourth," "Christmas in Washington" and "The National Memorial Day Concert."
The Army Ground Forces Band serves as an outreach asset for the Army's largest command, U.S. Army Forces Command, headquartered at Fort McPherson.
As just one of only three Army bands with a national touring mission, the Army Ground Forces Band travels the nation, performing at local, regional and national events. The band also conducts master classes and clinics for music students at high schools and colleges around the country.
The 64 Soldiers assigned to the AGFB have passed highly selective auditions and are among the finest musicians in the United States Army Band Program. The majority of the band's members have studied music at some of the finest universities and conservatories.
"Sound the Trumpets" is a free, general admission concert. No tickets are required.
