Faith loses first-round games in basketball tournament

FORT BENNING, Ga. - The Faith Middle School Warrior Bears' boys and girls teams lost first-round games against Opelika Middle School Bulldogs in the Percy E. Griffin preseason tournament Monday at Northside Recreation Center in Columbus.

The boys:

In the boys matchup, the Warrior Bears' Ben Gardner hit two free throws in the first period, but turnovers and a strong Bulldogs defense held Faith to four points for the half.

Matt Stitzel, Gardner and B.J. Knight added seven points in the third period for the Warrior Bears, but the Bulldogs continued to score.

Trailing 46-11 in the fourth period, Faith's Dwhan Harrell hit a 3-pointer, while Gardner added a basket, but the game ended with the Bulldogs on top, 56-16.

The girls:

In the girls game, the Lady Warrior Bears trailed 13-5 at the end of the first period. The Lady Bulldogs capitalized on Warrior Bears missed shots and held a 29-5 lead at the half.

The Lady Bulldogs dominated in the second half, sealing the 54-16 win.

The tournament:

Twenty-eight teams from the tricommunity, Opelika, Ala., and Harris County are competing in the Percy E. Griffin preseason tournament at venues across Columbus.

The teams have been playing since Monday.

Division winners will advance to the playoffs. The playoff games are slated for 7:20 and 8:30 p.m. today at Northside High School. The championship game will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Spencer High School.

The boys: Bulldogs: Graham 10, S. Tolbert 7, Buggs 6, Keith 6, Wilson 6, Dowdell 4, Rogers 4, Fulton 3, Gopher 2, Mitchell 2, Glenn 2, Meadows 2, J. Tolbert 2.

Warrior Bears: Gardner 6, Harrell 6, Knight 2, Stitzel 2.

The girls: The Lady Bulldogs: Cannon 12, Williams 11, Garner 9, Benton 8, Lockhart 5, Caldwell 4, Adams 2, Dardin 2.

The Lady Warrior Bears: McKenrick 9, Williams 5, Tweed 2.
