Soldiers from 4th Infantry Division and 10th Special Forces Group who routinely use space-based capabilities participated in the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command Warfighter Forum in Colorado Springs, Colo., Dec. 8-9.
The purpose of the two-day forum was to gain insights from front-line warfighters on how to improve the use of space-based capabilities within the operating force. These capabilities typically fall within the space force enhancement area, which includes Intelligence-Surveilance-Reconaissance, missile warning, satellite communication, Position-Navigation-Timing (including GPS) and Friendly Force Tracking.
Brig. Gen. Kurt S. Story, USASMDC/ARSTRAT deputy commanding general for operations, addressed participants from 10th Special Forces Group to begin the second day. He told the group that the command needs the warfighter perspective on space-based capabilities in order to resolve any Army-wide gaps in services.
Story said, "Our goal is to take to the Chief of Staff of the Army the answers to the questions - Do we have space right for the operational needs of the Army' What are our shortfalls' What are the solutions' We need your help in helping the rest of the Army."
Frank Cox, Wargame Division chief in USASMDC/ARSTRAT Futures Warfare Center which hosted the Forum, said the insights for both sessions will be used to shape upcoming exercises and training opportunities.
"This is not about us," Cox told both groups. "It is about you."
