The Rock Island County Board has proclaimed November 2026 as National Veterans and Military Families Month, recognizing the service and sacrifice of veterans, service members, and the families who support them.
Board member Carla Enburg read the proclamation into record and joined Chairman Richard Brunk as they presented a copy of the proclamation to Col. Jason Knapp, Rock Island Arsenal Garrison Commander, and Parris Silvis, RI County Veterans Assistance Commission assistant superintendent, during the board meeting Tuesday evening.
A large contingent of veterans was also present representing the Vietnam Veterans of America, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and Marine Corps League. Individuals were present that served in our nation’s conflicts spanning from Korea to Iraq and Afghanistan.
Military families routinely face separations caused by deployments and frequent moves, challenges experienced by an estimated 2.6 million family members each year. The proclamation also recognizes Rock Island County’s longstanding connection to military service through the Rock Island Arsenal, which has been part of the community since 1862.
“I want to take this opportunity to thank the county and it’s leadership for the support they provide to us at Rock Island Arsenal,” said Knapp. “In my 29 years of service, this is the most military and veteran supportive community I’ve been a part of.”
Throughout November, the county encourages residents to honor county veterans and the families of Rock Island Arsenal personnel for their continued commitment and resilience.
