FORT HUACHUCA, Ariz. — The Communications-Electronics Command's U.S. Army Information Systems Engineering Command hosted an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers technical talk conducted by Arizona State University on Aug. 27 at Fort Huachuca. This event brought together Army personnel, academia, and industry to explore antenna radiation pattern measurements.

Justin Dobbins presented the technical session, which examined how radiation patterns show the way an antenna transmits and receives energy in three-dimensional space and how those patterns help engineers assess coverage, signal strength, and performance.

The discussion addressed key antenna performance concepts, including main lobes, sidelobes, gain, beamwidth, and the relationship between transmitting and receiving patterns. This talk also introduced measurement environments and equipment, such as anechoic chambers, outdoor ranges, compact ranges, calibration procedures, and data-acquisition systems.

Understanding antenna performance supports the design, integration, and sustainment of communications, radar, satellite, and wireless systems. This technical exchange provided participants with foundational knowledge relevant to evaluating antenna specifications, predicting interference, and supporting dependable communication capabilities.

As part of the U.S. Army Materiel Command CECOM, USAISEC provides systems engineering and related support for communications and information technology systems worldwide, helping enable installation resilience for the Army and joint forces.

This event reflected the value of academic and industry partnerships in advancing AMC’s workforce development and technical readiness. By connecting personnel with subject matter experts and current engineering practices, USAISEC helps strengthen the expertise needed to deliver resilient communications and information systems to Soldiers.
