Physical Readiness: Building Combat-Effective Movement Patterns for the CFT

Turf Talk: Physical Readiness

The Sandbag Lift & Place event requires Soldiers to safely lift and place sixteen 40lb sandbags onto a 65inch platform. This movement is one of the most physically taxing components of the CFT because it demands explosive power, endurance, core stability, and precise technique while under fatigue. Units should train Soldiers to lift efficiently using consistent mechanics that reduce wasted energy and prevent avoidable injuries.

SO WHAT?  
Performance on this event directly impacts a Soldier’s cumulative CFT time. Since the CFT is a continuous, combat-focused assessment, inefficient sandbag handling slows transition between events and compounds fatigue. Every sandbag placed correctly the first time prevents unnecessary time loss and reduces the risk of injury. Mastering this event improves real-world combat readiness by enhancing Soldiers’ ability to lift, load, and maneuver heavy objects under stress.

Introduction  
The CFT is now a field-executable fitness standard for combat specialties, designed to measure combat-relevant physical capacity under sustained effort. The Sandbag Lift onto Platform reflects tasks that Soldiers execute routinely such as loading gear, lifting ammo cans, building fighting positions, or moving obstacles. Proper preparation allows Soldiers to perform this event confidently and safely while maintaining momentum across all seven CFT events.

Background  
Per Annex B of HQDA EXORD 103-26, Soldiers must lift and place all sixteen sandbags onto the platform using any method, without grader assistance. If a sandbag falls, it must be replaced before moving to the next event. This requirement makes the movement a test of both strength and precision. Poor mechanics lead to early fatigue, slow rep completion, and dropped sandbags costing valuable time. Units that train proper hinge or squat mechanics, bracing, and stable placement significantly improves Soldier performance.

Discussion 

Success in the Sandbag Lift & Place comes from repeatable movement quality under load and fatigue. Key physical demands of the event include:

Posterior chain strength for lifting and hip extension

Upper-body pulling strength for controlling the bag

Grip endurance

Core stability to protect the spine

Spatial awareness when placing bags on a high platform

These attributes are essential for combat effectiveness. Training them intentionally improves performance, not just on the CFT, but in daily tactical tasks.

How to Implement 

Below are targeted, actionable steps units can integrate immediately into PRT or CFT prep sessions.

Movement Prep: 

Practice sandbag deadlifts and high platform placements at moderate load.

Train Soldiers to hinge at the hips, brace, and lift in one controlled motion.

Emphasize secure placement by placing bags cleanly without sliding or bouncing.

Strength Development: 

Incorporate sandbag cleans, kettlebell swings, and deadlifts for explosive and functional power.

Add farmer’s carries to build grip endurance and trunk stability.

Use slow tempo lifts to reinforce control and reduce risk of dropped bags.

Task Integration: 

Combine short sprints or shuttles with sandbag lifts to mimic event fatigue.

Run Soldiers through timed “mini-lanes” with 4 - 6 sandbag lifts to practice transitions.

Train graders to count reps clearly and observe without interference.
