Heatwave in Poznań
The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) is warning of a second-degree heatwave (on a three-degree scale). Temperatures in Poznań are forecast to reach up to 34 degrees Celsius on Tuesday and Wednesday, and the perceived temperature could be even higher. Water fountains and fog lamps have been installed throughout the city to provide cooling relief.
The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management forecasts that on Tuesday (4 August) the temperature in Poznań may reach 33 degrees Celsius, and on Wednesday - even 34. Thunderstorms and showers may occur at night.
Water springs owned and operated by Aquanet will help protect against the heat. They supply Poznań tap water, providing very high-quality drinking water. They can be found throughout the city. Three-in-one devices, allowing you to fill a bottle, drink directly from a water fountain, or fill a pet bowl, are located in the following locations:
- Chopin Park,
- John Paul II Park,
- Sołacki Park,
- Jordan Bridge,
- Cathedral Island,
- Łukasiewicz Square,
- Old Zoo,
- Maltese,
- Jasiński Park (ZSBD).
Other springs can be found: in the Old Market Square (Lwy Oligoceńskie and Bamberka), on Święty Marcin Street, 27 Grudnia Street, Wieniawskiego Street and on Wolności Square.
You can also use the nebulae. They are located in the following locations:
- Wilson Park,
- at the monument of Old Marych,
- Adam Mickiewicz Square,
- Śródka Roundabout,
- Poznań International Fair,
- Kaponiera Roundabout,

- Western Railway Station,
- Lower Wilda,
- Avenida,
- Old Brewery,
- St. Martin Street,
- ul.Wrocławska.
Although there are many fountains in the city, bathing in them is prohibited – it's hazardous to your health. The water in them is not intended for skin contact or drinking, and is not subject to sanitary inspection. Violation of this ban may result in a fine.
You can cool off at one of Poznań's four swimming areas: Rusałka, Strzeszynek, and Kierskie Lake (in Kiekrz and Krzyżowniki). They are open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., during which time they are supervised by at least two lifeguards (on weekends, Rusałka and Strzeszyńskie Lake will be staffed more often). More information can be found at Poznan.pl . There is also a swimming pool in Kasprowicz Park (details are available at Poznan.pl ) and at Chwiałka .
"Avoid swimming in prohibited and unguarded areas. Never enter the water immediately after intense sunbathing or physical exertion – a heated body can experience thermal shock. Absolutely avoid entering the water after consuming alcohol," Poznań police remind everyone. "Pay particular attention to children. Even shallow water can pose a risk, so children should remain under adult supervision at all times."
How to protect yourself from the heat
Such intense heat can lead to heatstroke or sunstroke, a potentially life-threatening condition. Symptoms include fatigue, severe headaches and dizziness, nausea, fever, tinnitus, seizures, a life-threatening rise in body temperature, and increased heart rate and breathing. If someone experiences this condition, they should be moved to a shaded area, loosened clothing, given cool water to drink, and their face, hands, and feet moistened.
High temperatures are especially dangerous for seniors and children. They should not leave their homes during hot weather. If they must do so, they should be sure to wear a hat. It's a good idea to protect little ones from the sun, including by using an umbrella over the stroller—even when it's in a shaded area. It's a good idea to give them lukewarm, but not cold, drinks (herbal or fruit teas, as well as mineral water or juice) and bathe them in lukewarm water.
"It's absolutely forbidden to leave children or animals in parked vehicles, even for a short time. The temperature inside a car can quickly reach life-threatening levels," the Poznań Crisis Management Center reminds.
Heat also affects the human nervous system. It can cause drowsiness, irritability, and impact concentration and work efficiency – something to keep in mind, for example, when driving. It's worth taking frequent breaks while driving and resting in shaded areas to mitigate the negative effects of high temperatures.
Anyone experiencing dizziness, weakness, anxiety, or severe thirst and headaches during hot weather can call the emergency number (tel. 112) and, if possible, move to a cooler place. People taking medication should consult a doctor to assess their effect on thermoregulation and fluid and electrolyte balance.
You also need to take care of your animals - provide them with shade and water and do not leave them in the sun or in the car.
During the day, it's a good idea to close windows and blinds to limit the flow of hot air into rooms (especially on the sunny side). It's best to open windows in the morning and at night, when temperatures are lower. Light, airy clothing made of natural fabrics and in light colors also works well.
Avoid extreme temperatures and limit sun exposure. It's best to stay in the sun for no more than two hours a day, and use sunscreen. Extreme heat is also not a good time for sports training. Physical exertion, such as running, can lead to dehydration, muscle cramps due to dehydration and mineral loss, overheating, or heatstroke.
Poznań remembers the Warsaw Uprising
On Saturday, August 1st, at precisely 5:00 PM, alarm sirens sounded in Poznań. The capital of Greater Poland commemorated the 82nd anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising. On behalf of the residents, Bartosz Derech, Deputy Mayor of Poznań, laid flowers at the monument.
On Saturday, the 82nd anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising was commemorated at the monument to the Polish Underground State and the Home Army. Representatives of veterans, central and local authorities attended the ceremony. The city was represented by Bartosz Derech, Deputy Mayor of Poznań, and Andrzej Rataj, Deputy Chairman of the City Council.
"Today, years later, we no longer focus solely on the military dimension of that uprising. We think primarily of the people – their dreams, hopes, and steadfastness. We remember the young girls and boys who, instead of planning their future, took up arms. We remember the civilians who, in the ruins of Warsaw, fought for survival and to preserve their humanity," said Bartosz Derech, Deputy Mayor of Poznań. "We, the residents of Poznań, understand the meaning of the word 'uprising' particularly well. The history of our city is also a history of courage and the fight for freedom. That is why the memory of Warsaw's heroes is so precious to us. We are united by the belief that the pursuit of freedom is an incumbent duty, one that cannot and must not be abandoned. Today's ceremony is not only an act of remembrance. It is also an obligation. A commitment to pass on historical truth to the younger generation, to nurture the national community, and to build a Poland based on responsibility, solidarity, and mutual respect."
As usual, on this day, during the Poznań ceremonies, a specific participant in the uprising is remembered. This year, the figure of Lieutenant Jan Nowicki, codename "Ryś," was highlighted. He was born in 1910 in Dębiec (later incorporated into Poznań). He worked on the railway and was a football striker for the Lutnia Dębiec club, which later became Lech Poznań. He was active in the security and counterintelligence department of the Home Army Headquarters, in a unit that carried out operations to eliminate informers and participated in the rescue of Polish officers from prison. He fought in the Warsaw Uprising and disappeared during it; he was likely buried in a mass grave at Powązki Cemetery. For many years, the identity of "Ryś" remained a mystery to historians. It was known that he came from Greater Poland, as evidenced by his accent. Only Wojciech Königsberg, a historian, after painstaking investigation and with the help of Professor Remigiusz Wiśniewski from the University of Zielona Góra solved the mystery. After analyzing sources and breaking the Home Army cipher, they revealed that "Ryś" was Jan Nowicki.
During the ceremony, a Roll Call of Remembrance was read, after which delegations laid flowers at the monument to the Polish Underground State and the Home Army. After the main ceremonies, participants proceeded to the Dominican Church, where they laid wreaths in the church's cloister, next to the plaque commemorating Home Army soldiers.
Earlier, at 3:30 p.m., a Mass was celebrated at the Church of the Holy Savior on Fredry Street for those who died in the Warsaw Uprising. Flowers were also laid at the memorial plaque there.
The Warsaw Uprising broke out on August 1, 1944, at 5:00 PM. Poles attacked German targets in the occupied capital. The insurgents sought to liberate Warsaw before the Soviet army entered. On October 3, after 63 days of fighting, the decision was made to surrender. Approximately 18,000 soldiers and over 200,000 Warsaw residents died in the uprising.
