WHEELER ARMY AIRFIELD, Hawaiʻi — U.S. Army Garrison Hawaiʻi (USAG Hawaiʻi), in coordination with the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT), the City and County of Honolulu, and the U.S. Navy, opened Kolekole Pass at 5:00 a.m. to provide a temporary alternate route for motorists following a major water main break along Farrington Highway.

The early morning access enabled controlled, one-way traffic flow through Schofield Barracks, with more than 1,200 vehicles safely transiting the pass during the morning commute. The effort helped reduce congestion and supported West Oʻahu residents traveling between the leeward coast and central Oʻahu.

“Our ability to open Kolekole Pass on short notice reflects the strength of our partnerships across Hawaiʻi,” said Col. Rachel Sullivan, commander, U.S. Army Garrison Hawaiʻi. “When emergencies impact the community, we work closely with our state and local partners and in this case the U.S. Navy at Lualualei to provide safe, timely solutions that support our neighbors.”

The operation reflects a timely coordinated, multi-agency response, between state and city partners managing traffic operations and the U.S. Navy supporting broader regional coordination.

USAG Hawaiʻi remains committed to supporting state and county partners during emergency situations and stands ready to assist with coordinated response efforts that enhance public safety and mobility across the island.
