Redstone tenants and Garrison support staff met last week to craft an area development plan for the Defense Park district of Redstone Arsenal.
One of eight districts managed by the Garrison, the southeast corner is known as Defense Park, considered a critical district of Redstone. It’s home to a wide variety of activities – training, testing, development, admin, storage and recreation. According to the Directorate of Public Works: When you compare building square footage to total land area, this 3,400-acre district is the third most dense.
An area development plan is essentially the master plan of a particular district. Last week’s five-day ADP workshop culminated with an out brief Friday afternoon.
“This workshop is the third such workshop we’ve conducted in the last 18 months to cover this district and two others,” Jay Howell, community planner with master planning division in the Directorate of Public Works, said. “One was the Goss Road Corridor and the other was the Spring Branch District, which is immediately north of Defense Park.”
These workshops collect the future requirements and facility needs of the tenants who work in a district to envision what this area could be 20 years from now. Attendees are encouraged to share their input and converse among themselves to understand other vantage points.
Garrison Commander Col. Erin Eike said she appreciated last week’s workshop.
“There were a lot of tenants interested and involved as we look to see what Redstone needs to be in the future,” Eike said.
“This strategic input helps shape how we’re going to operate,” she told the participants at Friday’s out brief.
The workshop had 50 attendees across 19 organizations over the five days.
“It’s a good thing,” Kevin Hayes, master planner with the Space and Missile Defense Command, said. “It’s always good to plan. It’s good to have a good understanding of where you are and where you need to go. And hopefully that’s what we accomplished this week.”
The Garrison manages eight of Redstone Arsenal’s 10 districts. The other two include NASA’s district and the EUL (Enhanced Use Lease) Redstone Gateway district, according to Kaela Hamby, the military construction branch chief in the Directorate of Public Works master planning division.
Input from the workshop will be documented by contractor Alliance-WSP. And then the Garrison will decide what to do with these projects, using feedback from the tenants, in the short-, mid- and long-term. An area development plan is expected by the end of June.
“We’re here to sustain and keep Redstone Arsenal operating at the highest level,” Matt Carden, an urban planner for Alliance-WSP, said.
