Community forum highlights back-to-school updates, safety efforts

VICENZA, Italy — Dozens of community members gathered Aug. 13 at the Golden Lion on Caserma Ederle for the Community & Leaders Information Forum, where garrison officials, tenant units and support organizations shared updates ahead of the new school year.

The event opened with recognition of individuals who have made a significant impact on the Vicenza Military Community.

Michelle Egas and Iwona Jeanbaptiste, volunteers with Southern European Task Force, Africa’s Soldier and Family Readiness Group, were honored for their leadership in the Spouse Sponsorship Program and Welcoming Committee. Their efforts have helped ease transitions for incoming families and strengthened unit readiness.

Peter Grillo, assistant business manager with Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation, was recognized for his commitment to safety across the Arena, Golden Lion and Java Caffè facilities.

Officials from Department of Defense Education Activity schools shared key dates and information for the upcoming academic year. More than 1,300 students are enrolled across Vicenza and Livorno.

  • Vicenza Elementary School will host a Sneak Peek on Aug. 15. Classes begin Aug. 18 for grades K–5 and Sept. 2 for Pre-K and PSCD. An open house is scheduled for Aug. 28.
  • Vicenza Middle School begins Aug. 18, with Chromebook pick-up Aug. 13–14.
  • Vicenza High School will hold orientations and Chromebook distribution Aug. 15. An open house is set for Sept. 4.

Fall sports include football, volleyball, cheer and cross country. A parent meeting is scheduled for Aug. 27.Sports physicals are available through U.S. Army Health Clinic Vicenza.

Several directorates provided updates to support families. Army and Air Force Exchange Service announced changes to the school meal program. Child and Youth Services outlined registration for before- and after-care programs. Army Community Service highlighted resources available through the Exceptional Family Member Program. The health clinic reminded families to schedule physicals, immunizations and virtual appointments.

U.S. Army Garrison Italy also briefed attendees on Enhanced Protection Operations, which may include temporary closures of non-essential services, increased security patrols and traffic impacts at Villaggio, Ederle and Camp Darby. No specific dates were announced.

The Religious Support Office launched a new food pantry behind Building 82, encouraging donations under the motto “Take what you need, leave what you can.”

Upcoming events include the Escape from the Tower Run, a 13K race from the Leaning Tower of Pisa to Camp Darby on Sept. 19. Additional off-post events are listed on The Garrison Outlook at www.army.mil/italy.
