Camp Darby’s test track now bears the name of Massimo Carpina, honoring his 41 years of service with Army Field Support Battalion, Africa, where he helped keep vehicles mission-ready as Deputy Support Operations Officer.
The track is used to test drive vehicles after repairs or routine maintenance. AFSBn-Africa leadership presented the new Test Track sign to Carpina at his retirement ceremony on July 28, 2025.
In 1984, Carpina began his career at Camp Darby as an intern. He quickly built up his skills, working in maintenance and quality assurance—earning a promotion to Quality Control Supervisor in just six years. For the past 25 years, he held the most senior “local national” position in the unit. Carpina is not only a leader, he’s the unit’s subject matter expert “for almost anything,” said David Krall, Chief Support Operations with AFSBn-Africa.
“That is truly an amazing trajectory to work through in that amount of time,” Krall said. “Massimo’s drive, talent and determination to learn, contribute, do more and make more of a positive impact has resulted in him outpacing most of his peers.”
Lt. Col. Ross Hertlein, AFSBn-Africa Commander, said Carpina has made an impact globally for the U.S. Army Sustainment Command.
“His name is known on multiple continents and by hundreds of professionals for what he has accomplished over the years,” Hertlein said.
The inscription on the sign read, “The quality, duration, and excellence displayed by Signor Carpina is an example for all to emulate.”
The recognition was an unexpected and wonderful surprise, Carpina said.
“I am deeply honored, and this gesture has filled me with pride and gratitude,” Carpina said. “Moments like these remind me of the value of commitment and the importance of the support I’ve received along the way."
