ANSBACH, Germany – U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach is home to various bees, wasps and hornets and while some are more aggressive than others, they are all protected by the German Nature Protection Law.
- Bees are typically fuzzy, yellow and black, and known for collecting pollen and nectar.
- Wasps are smooth, often with bright yellow and black stripes, and are attracted to sugary foods.
- Hornets are similar to wasps but larger, sometimes reddish-brown, and can be more aggressive.
Bees, wasps and hornets all serve different purposes for the environment through pollination and controlling garden pests.
Bees play a crucial role in the pollination process, by transferring flower pollen from one plant to another, which helps plants produce fruit or seeds.
Hornets and wasps also pollinate plants while looking for insect prey, however they are not as excellent pollinators as bees. They protect crops by consuming garden pests like aphids and worms.
Wasps and hornets are most active during the summer months, typically from June to September. Bees usually become active in the spring with the warm weather and flowering of plants. They remain active throughout the summer and into the fall.
If you are stung by a bee, wasp, or hornet, be sure to clean and ice the affected area. If you have allergic reaction symptoms, such as hives, dizziness or shortness of breath, seek medical attention immediately.
Should you come across a nest do not try to destroy or remove the nest.
