The White Sands Test Center hosted a courtesy meet-and-greet with the Chu-SAM team July 14 at Building 100.
Gifts were exchanged between WSTC Commander Col. Matthew Johnson and the Chu-SAM Officer-in-Charge, Lt. Col. Katsuya Urakawa, who is leading the mission this year.
Photos were taken both in the WSTC Commander’s office and in the WSMR foyer.
This exchange is part of the longstanding relationship WSTC has with Chu-SAM going back over two decades.
Chu-SAM is Japan’s medium-range air defense system with missile interceptor capability.
They’ve been testing at WSMR since 2000, starting with the build-up of Pony and Chile sites.
This summer’s test window runs July through August, with three live fire missions scheduled in August.
Thirty-five Japan Ground Self-Defense Force soldiers will be participating in the exercise, along with around fifty-five JGSDF contractors.
VIPs from the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation are expected to observe one of the hot fires next month.
