WASHINGTON (July 15, 2025) – Lt. Gen. Robert M. Collins, principal military deputy to the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Acquisition, Logistics and Technology and director of the Army Acquisition Corps, announced the opening of the 12th annual Maj. Gen. Harold J. “Harry” Greene Awards for Acquisition Writing competition to encourage critical writing on Army acquisition.
“The annual writing competition is designed to identify, discuss and influence the outcome of significant issues affecting Army acquisition in today’s complex international security environment,” Collins said. “We seek maximum participation by keeping the competition open to everyone with an interest in Army acquisition, especially members of the defense acquisition workforce. In doing so, we honor Maj. Gen. Greene, who was passionate about our responsibility to provide warfighters with the best equipment in the world.”
Prospective authors may submit articles, opinion pieces or essays from 500 to 1,800 words in one of the following four categories: Acquisition Reform, Future Operations, Innovation, and Lessons Learned. Submissions must be unclassified, original and not previously published. All entries must be submitted by email no later than midnight, Oct. 10, 2025. Additional information about the competition can be found at https://www.army.mil/asaalt, including the call for submissions and published supplements of previous winners and honorable mentions.
A distinguished panel of judges will select four award winners and honorable mentions, one for each category. The winners of the 12th annual writing competition will be recognized during an awards ceremony scheduled to be held in January 2026 in Washington, D.C.
The acquisition writing competition is named for Maj. Gen. Greene, the deputy commanding general of the Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan, who was killed on Aug. 5, 2014, while visiting Marshal Fahim National Defense University in Kabul.
“The contributions of Maj. Gen. Greene to the acquisition profession and the warfighters we serve will be felt for many years to come,” Collins said. “He was an inspirational leader, and I can think of no better way to recognize his 34 years of distinguished service than by having this important annual competition named in his honor.”
