CAMP CARROLL, South Korea –
U.S. Army Garrison Daegu cut the ribbon on the newly renovated Camp Carroll Fitness Center during a ceremony June 6, following a $3.1 million renovation project aimed at enhancing Soldier readiness through modernized facilities and equipment.
The extensive project, which began in March 2020 and was completed this month, focused on improving both the functionality and comfort of the fitness center. It was completed in five phases, totaling $3,090,000.
Phase one, costing $185,000, converted three racquetball courts into a 2,400-square-foot strength training room. A subsequent $1.28 million phase addressed a critical need by replacing the facility’s HVAC system. Further upgrades included a $243,000 revamp of the second floor, encompassing the weight room, cardio area, and multi-purpose fitness room.
The renovation also saw the resurfacing of the multi-purpose court, replacing bleachers and scoreboards for $533,000. The final phase, at $849,000, focused on upgrading the lobby, administrative areas, restrooms, locker rooms, and converting another racquetball court into an 800-square-foot functional fitness/boxing room.
“This project encompassed comprehensive facility upgrades, including renovated restrooms, locker rooms, showers, and saunas to enhance customer comfort,” said Larry Butler, USAG Daegu’s Chief of Sports, Fitness and Aquatics. “It also featured improved administrative space, conversion of four racquetball courts into dedicated fitness spaces, a new cardio fitness area, and a newly upgraded basketball court complete with new bleachers and scoreboards.”
The upgrades are expected to significantly improve the training capabilities and overall well-being of Soldiers stationed at Camp Carroll for years to come.
