JOINT BASE LEWIS-McCHORD, Wash. – The Lewis-McChord Family Scholarship Fund awarded 35 military family members $54,250 in scholarships May 29 during a ceremony at the French Theater on Lewis Main, Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

“We proudly serve active duty, retired and surviving spouses, as well as children of all military branches within 50 miles of JBLM,” said Ceasarae Galvan, the fund’s chair. “This year’s awards ceremony was particularly special, as the scholarships distributed propelled us past the $1 million mark.”

Awardees were divided into three categories, including six military spouses, four family members pursuing continuing education and 25 high school seniors.

Judges considered applicants’ academic standing and all-around personal lives and community work, deciding who would win scholarship money pulled in through the community, said Chris Villalpando, the fund’s vice-chair.

Lt. Gen. Matthew McFarlane, I Corps commanding general, addressed the scholarship recipients and presented their certificates.

“Your presence here tonight proves you made the powerful decision to invest in your education — and more importantly, to invest in yourself,” he said. “Keep growing. Keep choosing better. The pursuit of excellence never ends — and we can’t wait to see what you do next.”
