PICATINNY ARSENAL, N.J. - Picatinny Arsenal supported multiple Memorial Day observances over the holiday weekend.
Servicemembers spoke at various municipalities, American Legions, and Veterans of Foreign War posts, honoring the military men and women who died in service to the United States during peacetime and war.
First observed after the Civil War, Memorial Day was initially called “Decoration Day” because families gathered to remember their loved ones by decorating gravesites with flowers or flags. This tradition continues across America today.
At Picatinny, 174 red-oak trees are planted and dedicated for New Jersey service members who have died in overseas operations since Sept. 11, 2001.
