DRAWSKO POMORSKIE, Poland - Sgt. Maj. of the Army Michael R. Weimer visited multiple forward operating sites in Poland from Jan. 24 to Jan. 25, 2025. Throughout his visit to the Powidz and Drawsko-Pomorskie area, Weimer engaged with senior leaders and Soldiers of regionally aligned forces under Operation Assure, Deter, and Reinforce. Brigades from both the 1st Cavalry Division, and 1st Armored Division, provided a tour of their respective sites and their training facilities.

“It’s really exciting to be out here, and seeing the 1st Armored Division team in action,” said Weimer. “It’s very different to come out here and actually display your true capability in an environment like this.”

As the 17th Sergeant Major of the Army, Weimer is responsible for ensuring Soldiers are in a constant state of readiness across the enlisted force. At Drawsko Pomorskie Training Center (DCTC), Weimer met with a local field feeding team supporting Soldiers conducting gunnery operations. He believes a proper meal ensures Soldiers are fit and ready to fight.

“Our primary mission is how to feed Soldiers in a large-scale combat operation environment,” said Weimer. “You can only survive so long with a positive, fired up will to fight on MREs. A hot meal is a game changer for a combat formation.”

After the tour of the field feeding site, Weimer took a ride and witnessed a demonstration of one of the Bradley Fighting Vehicles used in gunnery operations. Soldiers of the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, have immediately begun training and operations in the field after recently arriving at DCTC in the past two months.

“It’s important to bolster our NATO allies, but it’s also important for our Soldiers to come over here and increase their readiness,” said Weimer. “These countries that we are supporting is a great place for us to come, put our skills in action, and test ourselves.”

As a war continues across borders, Weimer emphasizes the importance of regionally aligned units arriving on Europe’s eastern flank.

“Coming to Poland, Estonia, Lithuania, Romania…those are new environments, new challenges, new problems to solve,” said Weimer. “So, nine months over here not only competes, deters and reminds folks we’re serious about security in Europe, but it’s also an opportunity for our soldiers to increase their lethality.”
