The Czango Festival is upon us in Torun
The Czango Festival will visit the Copernicus City on October 11-13. Over 20 different events await participants, including energetic music, dances and singing. Over 30 artists from at least 4 countries will provide almost 30 hours of unforgettable emotions. All this will take place in the picturesque scenery of Toruń's Old Town and the Vistula River.
The Czango Festival in Poland is a celebration of Polish-Hungarian friendship, which is being joined by other nationalities and social groups. The festival presents traditional folk music played on traditional instruments and in a manner passed on by masters according to the methods of Hungarian Dance Houses, which have been on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List since 2011. The most outstanding Hungarian, Polish and Ukrainian musicians and dancers will be guests, who hope for a better fate for the world through music, dance and other arts, and the organizers believe that traditional culture and the dance house movement will change people's worldview, give well-being and create a better community.
Yurt, cruise... and what else is on the agenda
On Friday morning (October 11, 2024), we will arrange the festival space, prepare the stage in the yurt, set up tungsten lighting, decorate the main dance hall with large photos of landscapes and photos from the life of the Changs to create the atmosphere of this place. From Friday afternoon, sessions will begin with learning dances and songs of the Changs from Moldova and Gimesh and playing instruments, primarily the violin and flute, but you will also be able to try playing the koboz lute and the gardonia and the drum. Then, the official opening of the Festival will take place - we will invite you to a tasting of high-quality Hungarian specialties and a concert, the main theme of which will be the music of Changs and in which we will present the most traditional style of performances, emphasizing the indigenous performers of Changs: the 84-year-old flute master András Hodorog, violinist István Luki Lukács and dancer and drummer Katyi Gyula. After the concert, there will be an opening of a photography exhibition by a Hungarian artist from Transylvania. Gyula Ádám immortalized the chango people in order to preserve this unique culture from oblivion. The last part of the evening will be a táncház, or a dance party, where until 2 a.m. traditional chango folk music will be played alternating with Polish folk music. We also invite the most traditional Polish musicians willing to play chango melodies together.
On Saturday (after a quick sleep) there will be classes for beginners and advanced throughout the day. The Saturday evening concert will be a musical journey from Moldova through the Carpathians to Kuyavia and Pomerania - the performances will include primarily the Hutsul band Czeremosz named after Roman Kumłyk and the Mielcarek Iwan Niwiński Trio, Kazimierz Nitkiewicz; Kapela Chełmińska, the singing group Środa kujawska, and among the instruments: cymbals, bassetla, trumpet and clarinet. Then dancing until dawn, again alternating with Polish, Ukrainian and Hungarian music. After Sunday mass in the church in the Cathedral, there will be a meeting looking for connections between Polish and Hungarian saints. At the end of the Festival, we invite you to another cruise on a musical raft carried by Polish and chango melodies. We also invite you to warm up in Gdańsk, in the Lion's Jaw in Oliwa on Thursday, 10.10 there will be workshops and a dance party. Detailed information and tickets are available at czango.pl
The uniqueness of the Festival
Close, natural, together; ethno&eco, or how? All of the festival's musical events will be without artificial sound amplification, the stage will not be distant or too high above the audience, so the music will be heard from a traditional distance. This implies the intimate nature of the event. Other features of our event are a traditional set of instruments, a relaxed old-fashioned tempo, care for the environment, healthy, good quality local food, no air conditioning, no advertising, no products of many global companies, no fast food, no stimulants and energy drinks, etc. While at the concert we play in an old-fashioned instrumental line-up, during the dance part (táncház) we put this principle aside in favor of playing with our Polish friends and a wide range of instruments. In the invited musicians, dancers, visitors, we value authenticity in the tancház movement, civic and Christian values and behavior, treating each other with respect, without swearing. Maintaining traditions in everyday life is important – it unites nationalities – additionally, mixed areas such as the one inhabited by the Changs (currently the area of eastern Romania) and the entire Carpathian region help us understand man and set an example of how to live in peace and harmony. You can find everything in folklore, each nation has its own history deeply embedded in the cultural heritage that we want to discover and enrich our lives and relationships – explain the organizers.
Novak Djokovic in Bolesławiec!
An unusual form of recognition of the achievements of the most outstanding tennis player - a mural depicting the Serb Novak Djokovic was created at the tennis courts of the Municipal Tennis Club, located near the marketplace on Jeleniogórska Street.
The idea for and sponsor of the mural is Robert Stankowski, who is also a tennis fanatic, plays and works on the city courts - he helps maintain the courts, and is also a tennis instructor.
- Djoković is the best tennis player in history, he has won the most Grand Slam tournaments, the most Masters tournaments, he was the longest reigning number 1 in the ATP ranking. This year Djoković won the coveted Olympic gold medal, the only valuable trophy he lacked - explains Robert Stankowski when asked why the image of the Serb was on the mural.
- There was another project in mind, but it was very difficult and expensive to implement. If there are funds, maybe other murals will be created. I have many ideas - he adds.
