FORT LIBERTY, N.C. – Soldiers and equipment from XVIII Airborne Corps are continuing support efforts in Western North Carolina, led by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the North Carolina Dual Status Commander. U.S. Northern Command is overseeing the active-duty forces who are supporting the North Carolina Dual Status Commander.

By the end of today, Task Force Castle will have approximately 500 more personnel with the addition of Task Force Talon (1-502 Infantry Battalion) from the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) to further support route clearance and aid distribution efforts. 160th Special Operations Regiment (Airborne) is also providing rotary wing support alongside the 82nd and 101st Combat Aviation Brigades.

Yesterday, soldiers identified trafficable routes for aid delivery in Swannanoa, Pleasant Grove, Old Fort, Spruce Pine, Bakersville, Fairview, and Emerald City. Task Force Castle received over 2800 meals and 4500 bottles of water and have begun distribution across the region. The 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade continues operations out of Asheville airport, and yesterday delivered 50 pallets, equaling over 85,000 pounds of cargo.

“I am incredibly proud of what our Soldiers of the XVIII Airborne Corps are doing to assist our fellow citizens of North Carolina in support of the NC National Guard, FEMA, NGOs, First Responders, and other volunteer organizations.” Said Lt. Gen. Christopher Donahue, XVIII Airborne Corps Commanding General.

Today, Task Force Castle continued support in Buncombe, Watauga, Avery, Mitchell, Haywood, Caldwell, and Madison Counties, working to conduct humanitarian assistance to isolated homes and communities, distribute food and water, and assist in emergency route clearance.
