On Oct. 13, we celebrate the United States Navy’s birthday. For the past 249 years, our Navy has answered the call to service and has been a shield of the Republic, becoming the most powerful navy in the world.
Established in 1775 during the American Revolution, the Continental Navy primarily served to disrupt British maritime supply runs and commerce during the war. After we won the war for our Independence, the U.S Constitution empowered the new Congress to provide and maintain the navy. This allowed Congress to establish the Department of the Navy on April 30, 1798.
The United States Navy has proven instrumental to our fighting force and has been involved in every conflict our nation has faced. By blockading and countering enemy vessels, securing supply routes, and convoying U.S. forces and supplies, our Navy would play a central role in key conflicts from the American Civil War, World War I and World War II.
In 1972, Chief of Naval Operations Zumwalt designated Oct. 13 as the Navy’s Official Birthday to “enhance a greater appreciation of our Navy Heritage, and to provide a positive influence toward a pride and professionalism in the naval service.” The theme for this year’s celebration is “Warfighting Strength and Readiness” to highlight our Navy’s focus. Everything they do is accomplished through a warfighting lens, to deliver decisive combat power.
Fort Leonard Wood is proud to serve with Sailors through the Center for Seabees and Facilities Engineering Detachment. The Seabees, Civil Engineer Corps officers and Department of Navy civilians who train here gain key construction and facilities management knowledge to support fleet readiness.
Happy Birthday, Navy, we are proud to serve with you!
