U.S. Army Garrison - Detroit Arsenal, Mich. – The Honorable Rachel Jacobson, Assistant Secretary of the United States Army Installations, Energy and Environment, visited the Detroit Arsenal Sept. 5 to see firsthand the incredible work the garrison and installation partners are doing to support todays Army.

The focus of Jacobson’s visit was to get a clear picture of how the garrison supports their installation partners and the Army through quality-of-life programs and energy conservation.

Jacobson’s day began with a garrison overview brief from Carrie Mead, garrison manager for the U.S. Army Garrison – Detroit Arsenal. All directors and special staff leaders were there to answer questions and help paint a picture of what the garrison does and what their challenges are.

“You’re doing great work here,” said Jacobson.  “You have a very diverse team which give you many different perspectives. It’s really a wonderful opportunity.”

She also received a briefing on the installation’s construction plans which includes a Detroit Arsenal Ground Combat Systems Headquarters that would replace several of the aging facilities with a new energy efficient building taking flexible work schedules into account.

“Your future building plan really reflects the workforce of today,” said Jacobson. “Applying the Army’s new Resilient Building Policy would reflect a building-wide approach for making future investments on installations, with an emphasis installation resilience.”

After the garrison overview briefing, she received a special focus briefing with members of the garrison’s department of public works about their energy resilience programs and the new geothermal well testing they are doing on the installation. “Energy resilience is key as we work to manage our energy costs,” said Jacobson. “It’s good to see the emphasis that the Detroit Arsenal is placing on that program.”

In the afternoon she met with senior installation leaders and visited the installation fire department and child development center and did a short windshield tour of the installation.
