NATICK, Mass. — Brig. Gen. George “Chris” Hackler has assumed his new role as the Senior Commander of Natick Soldier Systems Center (NSSC) and Deputy Commanding General of DEVCOM, bringing with him over two decades of service in the U.S. Army and a deep commitment to the mission of supporting Soldiers.
Brig. Gen. Hackler, who began his military career nearly 30 years ago, has held various leadership roles, with a focus on research and technology. His selection for this role is seen as a strategic fit, given his background and expertise in these areas.
"I am excited to join Natick Soldier Systems Center and DEVCOM, both known for dedication to improving the lives of our Soldiers," said Hackler. "My goal is to ensure that we continue to innovate and meet the immediate and long-term needs of the Army."
Hackler emphasized the importance of understanding the larger organizational picture while being attuned to the immediate needs of his team. "The Army is a very large organization, and it's crucial to maintain flexibility and a clear understanding of what's important at every level," he said. "Transparency and empowerment are key elements of my leadership philosophy. I believe in being open about what we're doing and why we're doing it, and in fostering a culture where everyone feels empowered to contribute."
As the only active Army general officer in New England, Hackler plans to engage with the local community extensively. He sees this outreach as critical, not just for NSSC, but for the Army's broader presence in the region.
"Engaging with the local community and beyond is vital," Hackler noted. "I plan to work closely with the greater community, conducting outreach and coordination to ensure that the Army's needs are understood and met."
Hackler, who is married to his wife, Sonny, with whom he has a 23-year-old son and a 20-year-old daughter, also reflected on the importance of family and personal growth in his leadership approach. "We enjoy exploring new places and learning from different cultures, and I bring that perspective to my leadership style. It's about understanding people and what motivates them, whether we're moving around or settling into a new role."
In terms of fostering innovation, Hackler believes in pushing the boundaries while ensuring that the team is supported. "If you're comfortable with everything you're doing, you're probably not being very innovative," he said. "Leadership needs to back you as you push forward, but it's important to balance innovation with the safety and well-being of our people."
As Hackler settles into his new role, he remains focused on the core mission of NSSC. "The Soldier is at the heart of everything we do here," he said. "This place has a strong reputation, and my goal is to make sure that everyone knows the incredible work being done. Keeping the focus on the Soldier will keep me motivated as I join this dedicated team."
Brig. Gen. Hackler’s arrival marks a new chapter for NSSC, one that promises continued innovation and a steadfast commitment to the needs of the U.S. Army.
