FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. — At 8:46 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time, Sept. 11, 2001, an airplane crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. At 9:03 a.m., another plane struck the South Tower. A third attack occurred at 9:37 a.m., as a plane flew into the western side of the Pentagon in Washington D.C., and a fourth aircraft crashed at 10:03 a.m. into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers overpowered and attempted to subdue hijackers. In total, 2,977 Americans perished, and those that survived did so with physical and mental wounds.

During and after these shocking and tragic events, first responders, civic organizations and citizens across the nation responded with compassion for their fellow Americans and with patriotism for our nation and our ideals. Men and women answered the call to serve, uniting under our nation’s banner to guard freedom and justice and to protect the American way of life.

Oct. 25, 2001, Congress proclaimed 9/11 as Patriot Day, in memory of those who died and the first responders who went into harm’s way. Since then, on 9/11, the colors of our nation stand at half-mast, and many Americans observe a moment of silence at the time the first plane struck the North Tower.

We encourage our military and civilian team at Fort Leonard Wood to attend our Patriot Day Remembrance Ceremony at 8:45 a.m. local time at the flagpole on MSCoE Plaza to honor the sacrifices of Americans that day and in the months and years that followed. Let us never forget.
