FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. — August 19th marks the start of the 2024-2025 school year for the Waynesville R-VI and several surrounding school districts. As families begin developing and adjusting to new routines, it is imperative we acknowledge that safety for school-aged children is everyone’s responsibility. Talk to those in your care about safety during this important time of year.

Vehicle operators must increase awareness of what is around them and must give their full attention to the task of driving. Obeying all laws and speed limits is paramount for everyone’s safety. Phones and other devices are a distraction — don’t use them while driving. Seatbelts must be worn by every person in the car until the car is parked. A blinking light near a school signals that the school zone is active; adjust speed and understand tickets will be doubled for offenses. Watch for pedestrians, including in or behind driveways, in neighborhoods, and along school routes or zones. Stop when school bus arms are extended and lights are flashing; do not pass the bus.

Ensure children who walk to school know their surroundings; use a buddy system; and understand use of crosswalks and the role of crossing guards. Ensure they know their routes and how to contact help if needed. Talk to your children and school personnel about which adults are allowed to pick them up from school. If your child will be utilizing a bike, skateboard, scooter or rollerblades, ensure they always wear a helmet that meets industry standards.

Help bus riders by arriving to pick up points early and teach them not to approach the bus until after it has completely stopped and its doors have opened. Explain safety measures, such as providing bus drivers with maximum visibility.
