Poznan goats return to town hall tower

The famous Poznań goats have returned to the Town Hall Tower, one of the buildings of the National Museum in Poznań. The goats will once again delight residents and visitors of the city twice a day, at 12:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m., and possibly also on special days at 6:00 p.m.

The return of the goats was made possible by the work of Krzysztof Kurek, a tower watchmaker who has been maintaining the city's symbol for four years. The current mechanism, which was created in 1991, was in need of repair.

"The mechanism is unique, a prototype," said Kurek. "It has many theoretical solutions characteristics of machine construction. It has been working for 32 years, and performed about 140,000 times, which can cause irreversible damage."

The goats first appeared on the town hall tower in the 16th century during the Renaissance reconstruction of the town hall. They were destroyed by a lightning strike in 1675 and restored during the renovation of the Town Hall by Germans in 1913. Their mechanism was severely damaged in 1945 and restored in 1953.
