1st Information Operations Command (Land) welcomed back approximately 20 unit alumni who shared their memories from the earliest days of the command with the nearly 100 participants who attended the event at Fort Belvoir, Va., May 8, 2024. 1st Information Operations Command (Land) (1st IO) personnel honored the unit’s history, expressed its gratitude to command alumni, and participated in several fun, physical and camaraderie-building events during 1st IO’s annual Founders’ Week celebration at Fort Belvoir, Va., May 6-10, 2024. The event is celebrated each spring to honor 1st IO’s legacy and remember those who helped lay the foundations of the organization’s success.

Each day of the week offered a variety of activities:

May 6: A brigade run and a Family Fun Night event
May 7: A golf competition, with the 1st IO Operations division (S3) taking home the trophy
May 8: An alumni luncheon with more than 20 former unit members sharing their memories of service with 1st IO with an audience of nearly 100 participants.
May 9: A Best Team Physical Training event consisting of a one-mile run, 100 pull-ups, five 200-meter sprints, a 200-meter ball throw with push-ups, 100 150-pound dead lifts, five 50-meter drags of a 90-pound sled, and a one-mile run. The 2nd Battalion Red Team earned first-place honors, the 2nd Battalion Senior Leaders took second, and the 1st Battalion team finished third.
May 9: Athletic competitions with winners earning points in the race for the unit’s annual Commander’s Cup trophy. The winners were 2nd Battalion (volleyball, tug-of-war and cornhole), 1st Battalion (horseshoes) and Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment (trivia)
May 10: A prayer breakfast with guest speaker Chaplain (Col.) Larry Dabeck
May 10: The week’s culminating event, a formal dining out for unit members, families and friends with food, drinks, dancing and a presentation by guest speaker Col. (Ret.) James H. Harrell II on information dominance and his tenure as the unit’s Operations Officer (S3).

The U.S. Army activated the Land Information Warfare Activity (LIWA) on May 8, 1995, to support its vision of brining the Army into the “Information Age.” In October 2002, LIWA became the 1st Information Operations Command (Land), which continues the mission and legacy that LIWA began.
