4th SFAB PA Named CAPA Leader of the Year

FORT CARSON, Colo.- Maj. Travis Kaufman was selected as the Colorado Academy Physician Assistant (CAPA) Leader of the Year on Feb. 23, 2024, at the CAPA conference in Golden, CO.

The CAPA award recognizes a physician assistant (PA) who works collaboratively with their healthcare team and promotes the practice.

Kaufman was recommended by his military leaders at 4th Security Force Assistance Brigade (SFAB) and leaders of the College of Medicine at the University of Lynchburg. “Maj. Kaufman was recognized as the CAPA Leader of the Year because he is an outstanding PA and a stellar leader, officer, and Advisor who makes everyone around him better. He has a positive impact on everyone, from the patients he cares for, to the medics, physicians and PAs he works with on a daily basis, to the medical forces of our partners and allies across Europe,” said Lt. Col. Michael Needham, 4th SFAB's surgeon.

“I have had amazing mentors along my 24 years in the Army and I try to pay it forward and mentor junior PA’s and medics to excel in their careers. I am deeply grateful to have received these nominations and award,” said Kaufman. “Paying it forward and acknowledging the talent within our team is paramount as leaders.”

Kaufman is currently assigned to 4th SFAB as the deputy brigade surgeon and senior medical advisor for 6th Battalion, 4th SFAB at Fort Carson, Colorado.

“Working with 4th SFAB and our partners has helped me grow professionally and develop my leadership skills,” Kaufman said about his time as an Advisor. He has been previously employed with 4th SFAB to Europe, providing medical guidance and assistance to 32 nations in support of Operation European Assure, Deter and Reinforce.
