FORT KNOX, Ky. — The year 2023 seemed to fly by. Despite the speed with which this year passed, there were some notable moments that we managed to capture.
Our staff has chosen what we consider our top 22 photos.
So, as we wrap up what little remains of the year, let’s take a moment to look back at what made it memorable.
1. January kicked off with a bang – literally. Members of 5th Special Forces Group stopped by Jan. 11 to show us how to fire rockets at Hackett Range.
2. In the wire. Soldiers from 19th Engineer Battalion decided to conduct a little field training on March 29.
3. Speaking of training, members of the Fort Knox Directorate of Emergency Services conducted an active shooter exercise at the Religious Support Office April 18 as part of their quarterly training.
4. As a thank you to former garrison commander Col. Lance O’Bryan, members of the fire department invited him to feel the burn of a flashover fire April 24.
5. Kids of all ages enjoyed a special NFL treat May 19 when new members of the Cincinnati Bengals stopped by Fort Knox for a little team building and fun.
6. Graduates from the Fort Knox Middle High School Class of 2023 made local history when every senior from their class graduated May 19 – 100% pass rate.
7. Fort Knox community members represented at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery-Central’s Memorial Day ceremony May 29.
8. Surrounding community members represented at Fort Knox FMWR’s annual Fishing Derby on Camp Carlson Lake June 3.
9. Soldiers, civilians and families joined in on the 248th annual Army Birthday June 14.
10. Then Community Garden coordinator Alisyn Kandybowicz (right) and its current coordinator, Kentucky Colonel Maria Bell, enjoy the fruit of their labors June 20.
11. Several hundred attend the 2023 Freedom Fest at Brooks Parade Field.
12. Religious Support Office chaplains celebrate a highly attended and successful Vacation Bible School July 21. They were at maximum numbers every day of the camp.
13. Sixteen players of the Bellarmine University men's basketball team took on some serious training at Fort Knox July 26 to work on teamwork, including several rappelling opportunities at the U.S. Army Cadet Command tower.
14. Also on July 26, a relative of famed World War II commander Gen. George Patton Jr. accepted a unique gift – an engraved Tiffany watch – from a relative of Pvt. Joe Angelo, who saved Patton’s life during World War I. Patton gave the watch to Angelo shortly after the war as a token of appreciation. The watch was donated to the George S. Patton Museum.
15. After suffering years of financial struggles, Lindsey Golf Course celebrated a prosperous year this year, including being ranked 17th best course in the Defense Department and number one in the Army by Golfpass.com.
16. Several attend a very somber Patriot Day ceremony at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery-Central Sept. 11.
17. Even the coin toss by U.S. Army Cadet Command Maj. Gen. Antonio Munera didn’t go in the Fort Knox Eagles’ favor Sept. 15. They lost the 2023 Army Bowl on their own turf.
18. This year’s annual all-installation emergency response exercise Sept. 15 added a unique twist when DODEA schools got actively involved, testing their notification and reunification measures.

19. Thousands turned out for the 2023 Oktoberfest celebration at Brooks Parade Field Sept. 22.
20. Bitter windy weather didn’t stop the march of ghouls and goblins the historic district of Fort Knox Oct. 31 in search of Halloween fun.
21. Four little heroes were honored Nov. 16 for brave actions in the face of danger. Three of them were given rides to school inside of a fire engine within the week.
22. Officials announced Dec. 1 that the historic water towers that have stood watch over Fort Knox for nearly a century will be dismantled sometime in 2024.
