SOVIZZO, ITALY – The Vicenza Military Community (VMC) rolled up their sleeves and joined forces with the locals for the second annual clean up of Sovizzo, Italy, September 24, 2023.
This annual event, part of the U.S. Armed Forces Italy Garrison's Community Alliance Partnership (CAP), not only showcased the community's commitment to its Italian neighbors but also left a lasting impact on the picturesque town.
The CAP is a unique initiative that brings together the towns where American service members and their families reside and partners them with units from the VMC.
The cleanup event also saw the participation of young scouts, both the US Boy Scouts, represented by Troop 295 from Caserma Ederle, and their Italian counterparts, Gruppo Scout Agesci Sovizzo, to clean up their shared environment.
At the heart of this collaboration was Legambiente, (League for the Environment), a non-profit association dedicated to environmental protection and creating a more equitable society for over 40 years.
Sovizzo, a quaint Italian town, played host to this event, underscoring the program's mission to foster deeper connections between the military community and local residents. Local volunteers partnered with Americans to share the town's history as they walked the roads and hills picking up refuse.
The importance of this event is to foster closer relationships, and showcase the commitment of the VMC to the places where they live, work, and spend their free time.
The bonds formed through acts of service like these go beyond language and nationality, solidifying the Americans as integral members of the community.
Andrea Cenzi, city councilor of Sovizzo, expressed the town's gratitude, stating, "The municipal administration of Sovizzo thanks the American community present at the 'Let's Clean Up The World 2023' day in the territory of the Municipality of Sovizzo."
Cenzi extended his appreciation to the fifteen American volunteers who dedicated their time to clean up the Montemezzo area, showcasing one of the province of Vicenza's most beautiful hilly areas.
In the end, this cleanup wasn't just about picking up trash, but about making friends, getting closer as a community, and leaving a good mark on Sovizzo, Italy, showing how powerful unity and taking care of our environment and communities can be.
