WHEELER ARMY AIRFIELD, HAWAII – Time-honored traditions are deeply intrenched in Army culture, so when the Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment of U.S. Army Garrison, Hawaii, transitioned its commanders, it was done with all the pomp Army ceremonies are known for.

Inside the Wheeler Army Airfield Chapel, Capt. Kellie A. O’Boyle handed the guidon over to Capt. Caleb C. Rose, in a ceremony hosted by Col. Steven B. McGunegle, commander of the United States Army Garrison, Hawaii. In his opening remarks, McGunegle expressed gratitude for the service and leadership of O’Boyle, thanked Kelly for her dedicated service and underscored the significance of her leadership style.

“The way she conducted business and interfaced with and took care of our troops was remarkable and greatly appreciated,” said McGunegle.

With Rose now at the helm, McGunegle made it a point to reiterate the importance of leadership and the responsibilities Rose would now have.

"As a company commander, you are responsible for executing basic operations, keeping track of property, and fulfilling the various roles that a company commander embodies,” said McGunegle.

“This challenge also presents an opportunity. It's a role that provides a deep understanding of the Army's functioning beyond what most company commanders experience, said McGunegle. “You never know when you might encounter them in the military,” he said.

Capt. Kellie A. O’Boyle, the outgoing commander, shared her reflections and experiences during her tenure. She highlighted her journey from Georgia to various assignments, including her role as the Detachment Commander for HHD, U.S. Army Garrison Hawaii. Capt. O’Boyle's heartfelt words resonated with the audience as she recounted her service and leadership experiences.

"During my time here, I’ve had the privilege of working with great Garrison Soldiers and civilians. Truly, Garrison is an Ohana here,” said O’Boyle. “The team is supportive, caring, and proud, making it an honor to be part of this diverse organization, and the Garrison and the Honu ohana will always hold a special place in my heart,” she said.

O’Boyle extended her gratitude to all of the HHD Honu Soldiers and continued challenging them to learn and to push themselves and their teammates to succeed.

Following O’Boyle's remarks, incoming commander, Capt. Rose took the opportunity to express his thoughts as the incoming commander.
