FORT KNOX, Ky. — Fort Knox Garrison Commander Col. Christopher Ricci signed the annual Fire Prevention Proclamation Oct. 2 in front of the historic Brooks Field.
Joined by Garrison Command Sgt. Maj. Sherman Waters and the Fort Knox Fire Department, to include Sparky the Fire Dog, Ricci’s signature declares Oct. 8-14 as Fire Prevention Week.
The proclamation, which dates back to 1920, traditionally marks the first or second week of the month as Fire Prevention Week. The theme centers around cooking safety: more specifically “using caution when cooking to reduce the risk of kitchen fires.”
Described in the proclamation are risks connected with poor fire safety procedures in houses as well as recommended precautionary methods to counteract these risks. The overarching message is “Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to fire prevention.”
