FORT CARSON, Colo. — The Fort Carson outdoor swimming pool season came to an end fit for K-9s Sept. 9, 2023, as Soldiers, Family members and their four-legged friends gathered for the 13th annual Dog Splash event.

The Fort Carson Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation end of summer activity at the pool drew dogs of all breeds and sizes, as they romped around the pool deck and frolicked in the water with their humans. It was a sight to behold as the canines seemed curious as they waited in line for the pool to open. As the pet owners walked their pets into the pool area the hesitation turned to joy as the pets were released from their leashes.

One dog after another began racing around the pool and then more and more dogs lost their inhibitions and joined in on the fun. Pet owners tried to lure the cautious pets for a dip into the pool, which turned out to be a challenge for many as the dogs would go to the edge of the pool and investigate or take a drink of water. A small number of pets decided they had been away from their owner long enough and jumped into the water while others had to be “convinced” that being in the water was going to be a good thing.

Most of the dogs would spend about five minutes in the water before swimming to the edge of the pool and attempt to get back on dry land. Once safe on the pool deck, they shook off the excess water and reunited with their newfound friends, scampering about the pool deck. It didn’t take long for some of the dogs to return to the water and join their masters to cool off again from the blazing heat.

While some dogs were eager hit the water, others were not at all interested in getting into the pool despite the encouragement from their owners and, instead, opted to run around the pool deck. Plenty of fun was had for pets and humans alike at the annual dog day afternoon event.
