ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md.-Spc. Karina Morales, with the APG Dental Clinic, reads a book called “Sugar Bugs” by Dr. Sam Weisz and Erica Weisz about the importance of brushing, flossing and eating healthy foods during a visit to the APG North (Aberdeen) Child Development Center April 12.

“We only get one set of teeth, so brushing is important,” Morales said.

The visit was part of the CDC’s Month of the Military Child celebration. Lt. Col. Michael Villacarlos, commander of the APG Dental Clinic Command, also talked with the children and read a rhyming book called “Brush, Brush, Brush,”  by Alicia Padron. The children also participated in a brushing activity.

Villacarlos said healthy dental practices begin at home. Additionally, parents should take their children  to the pediatric dentist for regular visits, starting at six months old. Don’t wait until there is an emergency, he said.

He also urged parents  to talk to the dentist and dental hygienist and ask questions.

“Good dental habits begin early, “he said.

Villacarlos, a parent, said he was happy he could assist in leading this activity for the Month of the Military Child. Throughout the month, APG CDCs and youth centers host various special activities for children enrolled in their programs.

“When it is time for us to deploy, the children and spouses are part of that deployment process as well,” he said. “We don’t want to forget about the children.”

Dental clinic personnel also visited the APG North CDC on April 14.
