FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. — On Monday, we will celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Dr. King raised our nation’s attention to the importance of equality and civil rights through nonviolent movements and inspiring leadership. His life of service and action continues to impact positive progress.

Dr. King’s birthday, fittingly, is designated as a National Day of Service, encouraging all of us to help our fellow citizens and improve our communities. Let us re-dedicate ourselves to working together and let us renew our commitment to maintaining a positive environment where every person is treated with dignity and respect.

Keep safety at the forefront of your mind this holiday weekend. If you travel, plan for degraded roads conditions, increased traffic, inclement weather and low visibility. Drive focused and with caution; obey speed limits and adjust based on conditions; always wear a seatbelt and ensure those in your care do the same. Know how much fuel is in your vehicle and keep an emergency kit with extra clothes in your vehicle. Never drive while under the influence of alcohol, drowsy or distracted.

January is typically the coldest month of the year at Fort Leonard Wood — be prepared for weather-related emergencies, such as power outages or frozen water lines. Take precautions when outside and understand the signs and symptoms of cold weather injuries, such as frostbite and hypothermia.

We appreciate all you do, and we are proud to serve with you!
